Crown Trifari Libra Intaglio Pendant Necklace
Crown Trifari Libra Intaglio Pendant Necklace
Libra is the only sign in the zodiac that is not a living thing. Every other one is a creature or a person. Libra is an object, a set of scales, an idea about balance that the Romans thought was worth hanging in the sky.
Crown Trifari reverse carved it into glass. The scales and their laurel wreath are cut into the back of the disc, so they read as frosted white from the front, floating inside the clear crystal with nothing behind them. Turn it toward a window and the whole thing goes luminous. The frame is a braided openwork band with a Florentine finish, held to the glass by four small tabs.
There is a good story in those stars. Before Rome claimed them for the scales, they belonged to Scorpio. The two brightest stars in Libra are still called Zubenelgenubi and Zubeneschamali, which translate to the southern claw and the northern claw. Someone decided balance mattered more than the sting, and took the claws off the scorpion to make room for it.
Signed on the reverse of the bail, and still on its original Trifari chain, in its original pink box.
